Formic acid is a common food acidulant included in many processed foods to keep them stable and to add tartness. It occurs naturally in fumitory, bolete mushrooms, lichen and Iceland moss.

As an additive, Fumaric acid is produced synthetically, mainly from malic acid from apples.Fumaric acid is included in many dairy-based products such as chocolate milk, cocoa, eggnog, condensed milk, milk and cream powders or substitutes and yogurts. Fumaric acid is added to cheese products, including processed cheese.In addition, baked foods, sweet confections such as candy, snack foods, breakfast cereals and starch based desserts, processed meats and spreads as well as an additive to alcoholic beverages such as spirits, beer, hard cider, wine and wine coolers may use Fumaric acid.
